Nothing gets me as amped as the Olympic Games. One of our chances to shine on the global stage. I have confidence we'll do well this season IF the athletes will stop injuring themselves in practice!!

It is fitting to see Kevin Page in your events list alongside a piece on Harper. Harper actually created the Parliamentary Budget Officer role in 2006. He passed the Federal Accountability Act to put an independent watchdog over government spending. That law changed how we read the budget. It forced departments to open their books to scrutiny they never faced before. Even if they clashed later, that structural change remains Harper’s biggest impact on government data.

some good some bad to them all, Harper tried to clean up the RCMP as it was hugely corrupt during those years https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-rcmp-boss-vows-to-rise-above-lack-of-police-experience-1.692948 https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/rcmp-horribly-broken/article17997461/ https://nationalpost.com/news/the-rcmps-annus-horribilis

A huge huge challenge, in our unit we had two bosses tossed out the door as bad apples were scattered everywhere in the ranks from the top https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/zaccardelli-denies-coverup-in-rcmp-pension-fund-scandal-1.648600 to the bottom https://ottawacitizen.com/news/national/rcmp-luxury-aircraft-sold-for-about-half-the-asking-price But, its been faced with scandal before https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversies_surrounding_the_Royal_Canadian_Mounted_Police.

And, even after Elliot and Harper left we still encountered scandal in our unit, our boss https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/covert-rcmp-unit-hardly-a-secret-witness-tells-disciplinary-hearing a person a few cubicals down https://www.vice.com/en/article/the-rcmp-surveilled-thousands-of-innocent-canadians-for-a-decade/ I had two bosses die in one year https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/canada-training-centre-kemptville-rcmp-asbestos-mould-1.5378334 leak of blackberry encryption keys https://www.zdnet.com/article/canadian-police-obtained-blackberry-master-encryption-key/ (and we helped build this world class software it is https://thelogic.co/news/exclusive/ottawa-ice-wiretap-jsi-telecom/ it is world class software, as the rcmp was known to produce some world class applications, now mostly cut and paste shop but for its day it did drive innovation)

I think Harper's day came when he tried to mess with the OAS https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/harper-confirms-changes-to-old-age-security-possible-1.1197434 and the Elections Act https://canadians.org/analysis/harpers-fair-elections-act-prompts-concerns/ to this day people at Elections Canada are still talking about it, they despise change everything so old and crusty there (30+ year old power builder applications etc...).

Then came https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Senate_expenses_scandal I actually went out with someone who's father was https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/senate-scandal-widens-after-revelation-mac-harb-accepted-55k-loan-from-lawyer-who-did-business-with-federal-government Yikes the stories there as she used to have to answer the phones for the hotels he owned with prominent lawyers, government officials, etc... having a nice fine evening with the hotel's evening nightly guests. Sorry, your husband is busy right now can I take a message...

We've had our share of scandal in Canada from the We scandal to HRDC, we'll just change the name of it they will never notice or we'll shake up parliament etc... All sorts of games played to shake off and confuse us all.

During the Chretien era we had the dot con. I worked for SHL Systemhouse a great company a leader in Canadian government contracts. Then it got bought up by MCI and EDS, good went to worse then the giant bought it up that could not fail did https://www.investopedia.com/terms/w/worldcom.asp It was all about profit and greed. As they hung government over a ledge on various DND contracts (CFSSU as example https://www.tbs-sct.canada.ca/dpr-rmr/2007-2008/inst/dnd/st-ts05-eng.asp#t5-08 a mess of a project, DND is horrible at operational requirements as scope/costs/quality are all over the spectrum and still is to this day). The dot con era came and went https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/dotcon/ https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/wallstreet/ We went from hot to not. So many people left Canada to the USA during those years. We lost JDS, https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/rob-magazine/article-when-we-were-kings-the-rise-and-fall-of-nortel/ (https://globalnews.ca/news/7275588/inside-the-chinese-military-attack-on-nortel/ ) etc... who buys stock at 168 then sells when it all crumbles, know when to pull out. Does the casino even work well anymore? https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/30/warren-buffett-rips-wall-street-for-turning-the-stock-market-into-a-gambling-parlor.html such a short term play it in your underpants sort of place now - short term speculators. Banks merged during those years and government started hiring like mad as 9/11 came around plus Y2k as well. So, there was some hope. I could never tell if he was talking about donuts or the economy though, he seemed so confused at times. A proof is a proof is a proof don't yah know... so odd but whatever.

The Mulroney era, I think there was a law instituted back then that 80% of military projects had to be made in Canada. I remember I worked for DND during those years in shipping/receiving during my post secondary and we shipped stuff to all sorts of Canadian companies to fix stuff, make stuff and deploy stuff. Those good ol days are long gone will take years to get them back I suspect. We'll spend years fighting over this https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/economy/article-canada-leadership-defence-bank-finance-minister-francois-philippe/ along with the jets Yet, we just lost this massive contract worth billions if you consider the long term maintenance contact where the real money is made https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/article/bombardier-wont-contest-ottawas-sole-source-deal-on-new-boeing-military-planes/ bid low make up the loss maintaining the junk is the motto in the defense industry. Chose the right one? https://www.cpajournal.com/2025/07/08/the-story-of-boeings-failed-corporate-culture-2/ The jets will be ongoing forever https://macleans.ca/politics/ottawa/the-auditor-generals-report/ as our helicopters fall apart https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/lack-of-working-cyclones-frustrates-canadas-top-sailor-the-helicopter-has-been-letting-us-down We've been had me thinks as DND is lead by history majors not hard core engineering types. Fix it nope, clean it up nope, rebuild nope. Throw more money at the mess hope for the best raise the ranks as more money is thrown at the mess the motto now. Shameful really shameful what it has become. A money pit.

Now my partner is from another country and she says - I like the Harper era it was hard to get into Canada back then now they house people in hotels downtown ottawa cause they let anyone in who can almost say can-a-day? Not sure what happened over the years but I think this has to stop https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-ottawas-hotel-bill-for-asylum-seekers-reaches-11-billion/ and we need to get back on track as we seem to be going off the rails as flipping homes became as easy as flipping burgers as near free money is handed out (like candy, you sure you don't want more rope with that loan ? debt trap diplomacy is alive and well) https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/canadas-unhinged-housing-market-captured-in-one-chart https://ontariohousingmarket.com/2025/06/13/canadians-now-owe-1-85-for-every-1-they-earn/ https://globalnews.ca/news/10604338/canada-indebtedness-debt-levels-desjardins-report/ https://www.ceicdata.com/en/indicator/canada/national-government-debt

Its all debt velocity of money now as printing/borrowing and selling the country off (bonds) becomes the norm. What is even made in america anymore as we become over priced pencil pushers as lies/deception/deceit becomes the norm. And, bailouts, handouts and buy outs too. What innovation? Engineering is pretty dead now and science is getting cut too, no politician wants to know the truth eh!

The lost decade has been a hell of a party as housing sky rocketed everyone and grandma/pa was flipping homes. As the immigration conveyor belt kept on churning to no end. Where does all that money come from? And, what REAL jobs are being created is the true question. Sustainable or just another photo op? Politicians love their photo op for the history book, no politician wants to get caught with the hot potato - hey bud, what about the debt? shhhh... fais pas ca!!! as billions in bailouts and handouts occur https://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/nhs The same people that messed up this https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-phoenix-system-federal-government-alex-benay-51-billion/ are over there I heard and this mess too https://nationalpost.com/opinion/ottawas-latest-it-project-ballooning-by-billions history majors appointed, what can go wrong will go wrong. Find the appointments of incompetency and corruption prosecute them, don't think so. Clean up fix up rebuild. Not a chance. Now its milk the mess raise the ranks off to the next mess without question. Its kinda become the norm now. They'll keep feeding the biting dog more treats don't worry. Find a mess milk it and move on the norm now. And, everyone knows it no one says anything. Till the bar tab comes due I guess ... one day. Our kids pay that price?

Thank you for this article primarily on PM Harper. I have rarely voted for Conservative PM through constituency votes but I have respect for his candour and comments that can only further unite this nation. It is a testament that intra-party rancour can exist when politicians are in office diminish and disappear in our political landscape. This certainly contrasts with the bitterness between former US presidents that some espouse.

Be nice if we brought back integrity, morals, standards, values etc... our upbringing now? maybe its in our genes now? corruption/collusion/contempt/complacency and https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evolution-of-the-self/201210/greed-the-ultimate-addiction just part of our being now?

Hope not, I'm in a country now that has been through dictatorships https://bigthink.com/neuropsych/dictator-psychology/ and have seen https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2019/01/fear-a-dictators-tool/ no one trusts the government anymore nor the police nor the military https://www.cafehistoria.com.br/military-dictatorship-in-brazil-a-history/ It all festers from some dictator getting in power then increasing their power/control/fame/fortune (financial/legal/physical/emotional control over the people) then spreads into the powerful regimes as buddy buddy networks form of appointments etc... next thing you know the whole country is ruled by force and people live in fear constantly not trusting anyone or anything. The fences high and fear makes some a lotta money fear does. Lets hope we don't go there, lets hope.

So so important to have solid leadership with integrity and morals. And, in government institutions as well esp those that can exert great power/control. So important. Not wing it hope for the best, but wisdom and intelligence plus questioning it all to ensure its kept on the rails of right not wrong. With hope and faith? maybe.. luck, who knows. Question things is key ( https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/the-clarity/202306/the-decline-of-critical-thinking-skills )

Delicate balance and moderation it all is.

Too much of a good thing is a bad thing eaten up in no time, too much of an evil thing will destroy it as well.

Small is good simple is smart thinking as complexity hides the truthfulness to it all.

https://paulkedrosky.com/weekend-reading-plus-spvs-meta-and-fiber-buildout-2-0/ found:Why is Meta leveraging an SPV specifically to keep debt off its balance sheet to build AI data centres? This technique was used by Enron to conceal its debt and they were accused of fraud. The fraud was purported to be executed via accounting for “variable interest entities” ie SPVs. While the rules have changed somewhat, the intentions have not. Unlike Enron, Meta generates plenty of cash flow.

Meta is willing to pay a higher interest rate through the SPV structure in order to defease the debt from its balance sheet.

“Lenders to the SPV will get a roughly 6.8% interest rate, based on the current 30-year Treasury yield. Meta’s publicly-traded bonds maturing in 2054 carry yields of about 5.4%.

Meta will share ownership of the SPV with investment firm Blue Owl, an arrangement that is designed to shift the costs of building the data center off the company’s balance sheet.”

Canada is the 2nd uranium producer in the world, yet only keeps 15% of its uranium.Where does the rest go? South.Just like our aerospace IP, our nuclear materials, and $50B in R&D that returns only 1.2% per year.We have some of the world's richest uranium deposits. Strategic nuclear materials. And we supply raw inputs while the other countries set the global rules and captured the systems layer. The same pattern shows up everywhere: Avro Arrow. Arm Holdings. CANDU reactors built here, controlled elsewhere. It's not a lack of innovation. It's a failure to hold the value chain. You can invent at the top of the stack or extract at the bottom. Canada keeps choosing extraction and calling it partnership. This is the resource colony pattern applied to deep tech. And until we build the commercial layer around what we discover, the value will keep moving south while we optimize for research grants. The gap isn't in the research or what happens in the lab. It's between the lab and the market.

Don't just sit there!

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/commentary/article-elon-musk-spacex-xai-data-centre/

well just don't sit there get on the wagon fools! Elon has a plan I suspect with space cloud https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/self-assembling-data-centers-in-space-are-becoming-reality-as-rendezvous-robotics-partners-with-starcloud-elon-musk-chimes-in-that-spacex-will-be-doing-this if he doesn't do it china will https://spacenews.com/china-launches-first-of-2800-satellites-for-ai-space-computing-constellation/ Can't just sit there like dodo birds flipping the channels! get with the program start investing but our government so broken now and stuck in the 1950s esp CSA and DND. Small is good simple is smart thinking a must we need rebels not more 'yes' bobbleheads those that will stand up to challenge this old feasting on a mess of a system as a mess builds empires. We should see investments into small sats and there is https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/canadian-space-agency-yukon-college-cubesat-satellite-1.4652001 into space launch and rockets and there is https://spaceq.ca/canada-rocket-company-enters-the-launch-the-north-sweepstakes-and-raises-6-2m-in-seed-round/ but we need to go beyond that and think big with self healing satellites https://pentoz.com/self-healing-satellites/

ref https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/21/23/8117

Time we start getting innovative instead of waiting for government to say go (esp DND don't expect much spin offs nor innovation to occur there its history majors not hard core engineering types thus its the path of least resistance/work it loves its giants). Same with CSA lacks good solid leadership and innovation. Elon moves at lightening speed so too does china, all well financed and flat organizations I suspect in order to adapt and change quickly in canada we are infested by layers upon layers of uselessness https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/commentary/article-ottawas-bureaucracy-has-too-many-managers-who-are-busy-managing-their/ Don't count on government to move us forward we need rebels and thinkers-entrepreneurs, thinkers, innovators, value added risk takers not more shoppers and bureaucracy, nice house not much inside it syndrome, the problem. We need investment vehicles and is our next generation up to the challenge? We need coaching and mentoring from those that did innovative but https://www.investopedia.com/silver-tsunami-8418065 Think outside the box thinkers with https://in.mashable.com/science/42199/journey-to-mars-will-require-a-hotel-on-moon-and-this-is-how-nasa-is-planning-to-build-one etc..

We need more value added risk takers not more 'yes' bobbleheads! Don't count on government to change things its full of them. We need those that think outside the box. Thinking about https://connectivity.esa.int/projects/interplanetary-communication-action-1-requirements-analysis automation and robotics in space https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/Game-changer-This-Silicon-Valley-space-14379776.php we built the canada arm at one point... Inductive space launch of rockets from the moon where its 1/5th the weight https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarTram https://hopsblog-hop.blogspot.com/2015/08/lunar-pogo-hopper.html helium and hydrogen refill stations to mars and beyond? think big dream big outside the planet elon does as he day dreams daily I suspect as all his technologies come together with https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/neuroscientists-explore-how-brain-handles-teleportation https://www.dw.com/en/scientists-create-first-complete-human-embryo-model-in-petri-dish/a-56904093 we have this as well https://globalnews.ca/news/11572168/mcgill-bioengineer-creates-lung-tissue-3d-printing/ why send humans costly and risky to mars https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/dna-the-ultimate-data-storage-solution/ Dream big!

And, everyone talks about space junk, well take this opportunity to build something to clean up the mess. Big money in garbage collection and storing or getting rid of it. Elon makes a mess, well the world needs to stand up and charge him for the clean up. Much like the planet - We see it https://www.ghgsat.com/ we can monitor it https://www.ecosafesense.com/ but how do we clean up the sandbox that someone pooped in? who pays for that, those that make the mess of course hopefully. Opportunities in every threat. Just like this volatile stock market, catch the highs and lows can make a lotta money in one's underpants not doing much... till it dies of course - over saturates.

China has advanced its education system as well. How do we create less 'yes' bobbleheads-buy by emotion to producing more thinkers, value added risk takers, entrepreneurs and innovators is the real question? that starts at a very young age I suspect.

Random blurb:

inductive charging for sure.

Now, imagine you are running out of power on the road and the person besides you has a lot of excess power.  Why can't you buy that power off them through some inductive means or laser transfer etc... realizing there will be some loss in doing so. You are at a light and can obtain a quick charge of power while at a light.  Huge challenge in winter in canada but definitely doable here in Brazil and there are quick charging stations everywhere down here with every manufacture going in vehicles.  (let us not forget super conductors - https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a60732620/capacitor-energy-storage-breakthrough/ for quick charging capabilities etc...)

With the uprising of venezuela Cuba is now suffering as russia is now involved and I suspect soon china.  China needs 15M barrels a day USA 20M who will win the oil war? I better stop referencing these stats cause soon I suspect trump will shut them down - he doesn't like stats doesn't like science only 'yes' bobble heads apply https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=709  as lies, deceit and deception becomes the norm.

A rogue real estate agent at the helm of the ship what can go wrong will go wrong.  Cuba is a great place to be for solar and wind. As the wind howls constantly and the sun shines daily for at least 12 hours Want to convert water to hydrogen cheaply that's the place to do it as miles and miles of once prosperous sugar cane fields sit empty. Damn dictators, damn americans?   I'm sure they put that place under siege and control what the hell is an american base doing there?  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guantanamo_Bay_Naval_Base  I'm sure there is more than meets the eye there we shall never know about. I biked parts of cuba good people, crappy food, crappy government (they own everything and major oppression), dirty waters as people just don't care anymore given up hope https://deming.org/a-bad-system-will-beat-a-good-person-every-time/ dictators do that https://psychcentral.com/blog/liberation/2017/10/long-term-narcissistic-abuse-can-cause-brain-damage#1 https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/amygdala-hijack etc...

Now lets look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectricity  I built such a project when in high school using inductive coils etc...Many things shake rattle and roll, why can't they generate energy while doing so? esp vehicles esp massive trucks, ships etc.. realizing the size and weight added but maybe in time they will become more efficient and effective?how about a light bulb producing its own electricity by some means and storing it so power is always available to it.  A difficult thing for a stove of course or fridge for that matter, more to come from science and engineering?  We need more innovation not less now.  Yet, they keep cutting science and engineering - private vs public, where to put R&D? Maybe some sort of element can generate enough electricity for small devices such as a light bulb?  I say light bulb because its practical everyone understands we need light at night and can mass produce it to make some money... everyone needs one much like a spoon.  So, there is money to be made there.

I started to build, but failed currently - cause I just don't have the power and money etc..   to build a non-intrusive current monitoring device.  Imagine something that could monitor a motor in your house that does so through non-intrusive inductive coils.  You merely snap it onto a line and it monitors current conditions.  I think such things already exist though https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonintrusive_load_monitoring  https://tlo.mit.edu/industry-entrepreneurs/available-technologies/non-contact-voltage-and-current-monitoring  https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10947295  eg https://grobotronics.com/non-invasive-current-sensor-30a.html one of many out there. The coil has to be pretty sensitive to change though depending upon the appliance - fridge vs some transformer etc...

My dad was always experimenting in the basement as an electrician.  He wanted to hook up the vehicle to a home converter to power the home if the power went out.  He was almost there...  he says, our great great grandfather helped invest the fuse I don't know how true that was.  I think he was dreaming at the time.

interesting story of a physics prof gone mad? or perhaps not...

==== HEART AKINSON

when I used to bike race many moons back doing 100 milers (http://nuemtb.com/ ) and staged races (https://racelaruta.com/). I come across this guy in jeans and sandals in costa rica  https://autobus.cyclingnews.com/mtbphotos.php?id=photos/2005/nov05/ruta05/ruta052/DSC0108   doing a 120km day race up and down mountains.  Who is this guy I asked, supposedly he used to teach physics and owned a company building converters for boats Heart Transverter at SPI 2011https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLoMJ-D0R9U .  I guess one day he just jumped in a sail boat and sailed down to costa rica and that is where he hung his hat https://www.soulsofsociety.com/2016/03/30/honey-and-heart/  https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cw0onReuvbf/?hl=en I used to race against his son Rom https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/video-akerson-surprises-favorites-at-la-ruta/  https://thecostaricanews.com/75-year-old-adventurer-got-lost-30-hours-in-the-costa-rican-mountains-while-tracing-new-mountain-bike-routes/   that would have been an interesting life.  Not for everyone though that's for sure.  Simple living is good living though and small is smart.

But, I guess the true question is - will EVs survive? as grumpy old trump wants to go back to the 1930s we have been here before https://www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com/ will we do it again?EV sales are expected to slide under trump will Elon keep it alive?

Oil has to come down to keep inflation down hence interest rates thus housing needs to keep booming (the driving force of GDP no one wants a bad GDP rating https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_credit_rating trumps BBB big beautiful bill https://thediplomat.com/2025/05/could-trumps-deals-in-the-middle-east-secure-us-influence-against-china https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/06/04/congress/trump-debt-limit-big-beautiful-bill-00385941 ) can't print/borrow money nor sell the country off (bonds) now what? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_war https://advisor.visualcapitalist.com/historical-oil-prices/ dependency on foreign oil bad bad bad? https://wtfhappenedin1971.com/

We need R&D still? we need investment vehicles (beg and bend for others to save us?)  We need entrepreneurs, innovators and value added risk takers but this keeps happening every 10 year cycles https://www.reddit.com/r/CanadaPublicServants/comments/1r26l27/nrccnrc_laying_off_hundreds_of_talented_scientists/  How to get there if they keep cutting and youth give up hope in science and engineering.

Why take those difficult fields when history majors are making 180k a year running major IT projects in government having a great time messing things up https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-phoenix-system-federal-government-alex-benay-51-billion/  https://nationalpost.com/opinion/ottawas-latest-it-project-ballooning-by-billions  where is the incentive to try anymore? as failure is rewarded continuously.

when so much money is just wasted and thrown at the wall? its all about housing eh!  and, that's a horrible place to be as we over price ourselves out of a house and home. Failure rewarded.  https://deming.org/a-bad-system-will-beat-a-good-person-every-time/  https://www.gmichaelhopf.com/hard-times  truthful? AI will save us from ourselves? or just another Ponzi scheme? damn humans... greed.

science is getting cut everywhere...

https://www.reddit.com/r/CanadaPublicServants/comments/1r26l27/nrccnrc_laying_off_hundreds_of_talented_scientists/

https://www.canada.ca/en/government/publicservice/workforce/workforce-adjustment/workforce-reductions-federal-public-service.html

politicians don't like science... truthfulness nor engineering types

engineer/scientist/mathematician, accountant, economist/real estate agent/used car salesperson apply for the same job. interviewer and asks the engineer "What do two plus two equal? "four, exactly." accountant- give or take ten percent, average, four." economist gets up, locks the door, closes the shade, "What do you want it to equal?"

ref https://uh.edu/~trdegreg/econjoke.htm

meanwhile the history majors are still running DND and major IT projects - cut and paste shops over priced pencil pushers. Failure 101 is... no one wants success, milk the mess raise the ranks the motto now. As more money is thrown at the mess. Why fix the mess when more money is thrown at it.
