why do we need to win each time? enjoy the moment in time. I've spent countless hours in the gym (6hours daily in my youth) and countless hours on the bike (20000km a year 20k funding racing with some of the worlds best in nuemtb.com 100 milers racelaruta.com etc... I won't put all the links in here cause this site hates URLs and links to proof - substack sucks...) Most people live on credit cards when they race. There are good and evil to it all like anything else in life.
Balance and moderation is key, sustainability.
Same with our work culture now. As more money is thrown at a mess execs make their dough and move on. People used like debt pawns and tax slaves chasing the almighty buck to prove self worth. Seeking outside affirmations rather than feeling comfortable with self.
If you don’t want to win, then stay out of the competition. Or compete solo.
But the argument here is that Canada needs to support the athletes that are willing to do what it takes. And there is no shortage of such people. They just don’t get supported right now for whatever reason.
its not always about winning. If you are striving to win always you are looking for outside affirmations which just turns to an addiction-like a junkie cause it never ends. If Elon wasn't doing what he does (love him or hate him) he'd probably be the world's best junkie. They live on credit card many athletes do. I've raced with plenty and know plenty in ottawa etc... such is the name of the game. And, in big games the execs make the dough - fair? look at the fifa games. Huge money the execs made, athletes they make some dough for a 4-5 year period if that then many burn out, injury etc....the stuff yah never hear about cause its mostly all sugar coated. Just tell the truth on the matter, don't sugar coat.
Yah race for yourself always not for the goodness of the country, cause many of times we use athletes up then throw them away. Is funding there, to some degree but then again empires are built on that as well. Execs make their dough off the backs of the bruised -fair? probably not. Esp when many haven't really competed - been in the trenches. (much like dnd - many execs have never dug the ditches yet huge money thrown at a mess which gets milked silly, been there done that left those messes but could have milked them silly).
For someone to become a great athlete takes years. To become great at innovation to create great quality product takes decades. To build great leaders that play a fair game, are hard to find now a days.
You’re agreeing with what I said and what this article said. Canada needs to support athletes so that the ones that are willing to spend years training are not living off of credit cards.
Canada is missing out on all the kids who are talented and are willing to work hard but are not willing to go into debt to compete, or have other financial obligations.
Execs milking other people’s hard work is a whole other issue and its not limited to sports.
Everyone should have the chance to be the best they can be at what they love.
And racing for the country is a good thing not a bad thing. If you don’t fight for your country, someone will just take it away. People in military are laying down their lives for their country, look at Ukraine. But you think asking athletes to compete for their country is too much? Ok.
Yes, atheletes should have some sort of a retirement package or insurance for injuries etc. Those are much better solutions then to just not compete because someone somewhere might get rich
who's fighting for the country, defense spending is being milked silly! you haven't seen it I have! want to milk a mess join the defense or high tech bandwagon right now. Milk it silly.
You race for yourself otherwise you will be used up - boundaries are key.
You challenge self when you race you don't do it to gain fridge stickers, you will be used up! Been there done that seen many fall hard for that carrot. People racing so hard for the podium (eg https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/bishop-la-ruta-injury-update/ seen that happen as he was up front racing, probably one of the best mountain bike racers for that time period).
There are lots and lots of programs in place, look at how many clubs you can join in schools etc... lots of sports clubs. And, city run clubs as well (mostly booked up though, try to get registered for city of ottawa sports clubs good luck). I know plenty of parents that have mortgaged their homes time and time again in hopes their kid would make it big for 4-5 years...
Do it for the passion and love of it, do it for your own will. Not for the goodness of the country. You will be seeking affirmations forever as we use athletes up then throw them away (much like the workforce too - culture eats strategy for breakfast, lunch and dinner too).
Do we have to win each time - humbleness and humility builds character too.
Strive to be the best human you can be - write your own book not someone else's book. Try not to be codependent rescuing the world nor narcissistic like striving for continuous affirmations (trump anyone) yet so broken inside.
Live life wisely learn well always I tell my family members. Don't look for fridge stickers all the time. You don't need to win all the time. Be happy with self is key. Balance, moderation and sustainability.
(ah ukraine another oil war much like iran https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/03/07/biden-venezuela-oil-russia/ trump got his goods - venezuela oil 300B barrels- follow the money, oil andweapons - I worked big defense for decades we made a lotta money off of war off the backs of the bruised. Can go on and on about those wars, big money to be made from wars )
I've worked night and day for places working on great canadian products (missile tracking system, satellite systems, virtual border fences etc...)
Pushed to the limit working night and day then at the end of the show who makes the big bucks, the execs do. And, if it fails then more money is thrown at the mess, I've walked away from plenty of those projects but could have raised the ranks on many messes
we need better systems rather than just using people up putting them in debt making them go through misery (time training and sacrifices etc..). We merely just become junkies chasing the almighty buck. Using people like debt pawns and tax slaves.
Respect people's time and ambitions just don't use them like dirty socks then throw them away like garbage. Toxic that is. Lots of toxicity and many making money off of others which are then thrown away like dirty socks. The problem. Why try? if that is the case milk the mess. That's all.

Things need to be restructured. https://www.thecorporategovernanceinstitute.com/insights/lexicon/what-does-culture-eats-strategy-for-breakfast-mean and https://deming.org/a-bad-system-will-beat-a-good-person-every-time/ what we have now, many milk it (execs and business types) then we use people up and throw them away. Watch this high tech boom closely, as example.
